A photograph of a space in the urban landscape whose meaning is subverted through a digital collage intervention of dimensional type.

While exploring the city looking for engaging urban spaces, I became fixated on this brick expanse under a south Austin I-35 overpass. Shooting from a low angle, it became easy to imagine an exaggerated scale, the mortar lines as canyons. I wrote a short piece about that microworld to help me sort out the next step of the project.

The final piece shows a solitary figure, tiny amid vast, uniform expanse, fenced in all directions by “liberty”. Not that there’s anywhere for him to go, anyway.
